The many uses of Calcium Carbonate
Agricultural
Calcium is an important nutrient that strengthens a plant’s cellular walls and is vital in new cell development. A calcium deficiency can lead to common fruit diseases such as blossom-end rot, which is prevalent in tomatoes and peppers. Add in winter for annual crops, such as vegetables, just prior to digging. The calcium carbonate takes effect over the winter months and won’t damage young growth.
- Increased phosphorus availability.
- Enhanced mineralization and nitrification.
- Better water use, nutrient recovery, and plant performance with a healthier root system.
- Soil pH correction.
- Mitigates heavy metals in soil.

Application Guidelines:
If dug into soil, apply 250g/m2 and sprinkle additional onto the surface after digging. 1kg of Calcium Carbonate will be enough to correct the pH for 4m² soil. 25kg of Calcium Carbonate will be enough to correct the pH for 100m² of soil.
Before planting perennial plants like lawns, shrubs, fruit or trees, apply if the soil is acidic. Check the pH of your soil to find out how much you require. When applied to the surface around established plants it can take years to have any effect. Adjusting pH levels before planting or sowing is recommended. A soil pH test measures the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. A pH 7.0 is considered neutral. Above pH 7.0, the soil is alkaline and below pH 7.0, the soil is acidic. Powdered Calcium Carbonate acts far faster than granulated garden lime. Take a little more care when applying to make sure you get an even coverage.
One role of Calcium Carbonate known to many professionals, but that is not necessarily common knowledge to the average home gardener, is its ability to mitigate heavy metals in the soil. Usually, this is only necessary if a soil analysis indicates that heavy metals are present in the soil at levels that can be remediated. If the levels are too high, removal of the soil would be the likely solution.
Besides being potentially toxic for humans, heavy metals can be toxic to plants as well. Calcium carbonate does not eliminate the metals from the soil, but “ties them up” so that they are not as available for uptake by plants.

For | Complete Soil Improver stimulates and feeds microbial activity within your soil, helping cultivate a healthy micro-biome of symbiotic microbes. | Provides valuable nutrients to plants and helps change the pH of the soil by raising it to match the plants' needs. It's sometimes called dolomitic lime or dolomitic limestone, and provides more nutrients than straight lime. | The main purpose of Gypsum is to make the small particles in clay soil join together into larger particles (like that of a sandy soil) which enables better water penetration and retention, as well as better root penetration. | Fast acting, high Nitrogen fertiliser in granular form. Particularly effective for brassicas and root vegetables. Contains lime, which is good for reducing soil acidity. | Ideal for use during summer, but can be used throughout the year. Contains Sulphur, which is an important mineral for plant growth. Lowers soil pH, Ideal for reducing pH to safe levels for Acid-loving plants. | Compost Improver to mix with every bag or bin of mature compost. Compost Activator & Accelerator for compost making systems, as well as a tonic for wormeries. It will encourage beneficial organisms and microbes with soil & compost. |

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 July 2022Size Name: 500gColour Name: BagVerified PurchaseI bought this for a completely different reason than to use on my garden but it didn’t work out so I thought I’d chuck a bit on my hydrangeas which I did and what a difference it’s made, the colours seen so much more vibrant and my hydrangeas just seem more lush somehow. I’m sure it will work on all plants so it’s worth giving it a try.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2016Size Name: 1kgColour Name: BagVerified PurchaseUsed this to make homemade chalk paint but found it slightly too gritty. Next time I'm going to try to find a a finer powder. Having said that, mixed 2 parts emulsion paint to 1 part chalk and made a perfectly adequate chalk paint for crafting. Gives a nice rustic finish and any rough bits can be sanded off when dry.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2016Size Name: 1kgColour Name: BagVerified PurchaseAs I could not really afford chalk paint in all the colours I wanted, I have been googling 'make your own chalk paint'. Anyway, I have been adding -this fine calcium carbonate powder to emulsion paint and have been using it to paint - so far- a pine bookcase and a pine stool. The effect has been really good, and what I had expected. (I have, on both occasions, then used Annie Sloan wax to give it a 'finish' - but you won't need to, if you want a fully matt finish).
