– Learn Why Microgreens Fail, and how to avoid common problems (such as mold, germination and growth problems.
– Get ready to record information about your business, including :

  • tracker for seeds varieties and where you buy from

  • tracker for all costs (lighting, supplies, time, etc)

  • tracker for all results (weight of yield produced, grow conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) process and method used including dates of seeding, watering, germination, harvest)

  • who buys what, when, and get to a point where you can predict trends and production schedule

#4 Learn as much as you can from others too: I recommend you also learn from others, take courses even. You can also take Nate Dodson's excellent course!

One more thing…

At this point, you should be clear about a few critical questions – if you aren't, review once more the materials above:

  • What's the fastest way to fail you'll use to validate what you are trying to do (ie. get some people to buy your Microgreens)?

  • Who will be your customers and how you are going to find them (wholesale, food trucks, chefs, farmer markets, residential customers, community groups, local cafes, grocery stores)

  • If selling to restaurants, are you really ready to sell lots of small batches, or fewer large batches? Will you ask for payment on delivery or let the restaurant's manager pay you along with all other suppliers at end of the month?

  • Are you clear on your market research? who are the competitors in your area, what's the price your customers are willing to pay to your competitors? What varieties do they seem to sell? (in other words, what's the demand from the buyers you will need to fulfill!)

  • Are you going to market as “organic” or not? (you will learn more about how to get certified on one of the Upstart University course and why it may not be necessary

  • Have you nailed the process of growing Microgreens, across varieties?

  • What Microgreens varieties are you going to start with?
